John Mason, new SNP MP for Glasgow East

Scottish National Party sweeps the Labour Party aside in Glasgow East by-election.

The SNP party has triggered an earthquake for the Labour Party with it's epicentre being in Glasgow East. The SNP candidate, John Murray, polled 11,277 votes in the Glasgow East by-election where the swing from Labour to the SNP was 22.54%.

The result was delayed due to a recount, but there was no stopping John Mason, who overturned a Labour majority of 13,507 winning by 365 votes.

This was one of the safest Labour seats in Scotland and the UK. If the swing to SNP was replicated in the General Election, the Labour Party would be left with only one seat in Scotland, and indeed Gordon Brown, Prime Minister, would lose his own seat..

Alex Salmond, SNP Leader, and First Minister said this result was clearly a victory for the Scottish Government over Westminster.

The shockwaves are already being felt at 3am in 10 Downing Street.

Gordon Brown will be wondering what else can go wrong! Fortunately the populace of Glasgow East are not shy about stating their message and now Gordon Brown and the Labour Party will need to listen.

Can the British get Tony Blair back? Brown has not done one thing right since becoming PM. On the other hand, I love it that the SNP is winning. Maybe their time has finally come. I think the SNP more than Labour represents the Scots. Alex Salmond has done his level best with the party.

Nope ... Tony's gone. Brown is a Scot and should know better! :roflmAo:

As for the time of the SNP coming ....

...for as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself. - Declaration of Arbroath, 1320

Methinks Gordon Brown should be counting his Elgin Marbles!

Labour shall be swept aside and it shall all be Salmond fishing here in Scotland :smiles:

Thumbs up! Perhaps this result may give momentum for more independence from London. The boost to the SNP shows that this party really cares for Scottish and social interests. 'New' Labour lost its adhesion to the electorate. The result should be a wake-up call for them but they rather rely on their self-prescribed valium.

Sadly the SNP are now becoming an irrelevance, due to the overbearing bureaucracy of the European Union. Salmond's policy of "independence within the EU", is clearly an oxymoron. The reality is this: to gain an "independent Scotland", first you need to have an independent Britain.

The SNP's crazy notion, is that you can actually have independence within the European Union. The Brussels political commissars won't hear of such a thing. The EU wants to continue to rape and pillage the vast natural resources of Scotland's seas. Spanish, Potugese, French, Danish, and even Greek and Italian boats can fish in the North sea, and land all kinds of fish, and even take them back home. But a fisherman from Peterhead, or Aberdeen; Just let him catch the wrong species, or too big a shoal, and he MUST throw the dead fish back in the sea or risk imprisonment and a massive fine.

It is a farce. We must get out of the EU Now, and the SNP will never do it. Their own Party President is an MEP and well oiled up in the Brussels Gravy Train. He will never let it go.
